GERMINATION – SOWING THE SEEDS OF CHANGE
Photo: Carnival

This year sees Godiva Carnival embarking on a 5 year project leading up to 2012 called ImagiNation Our Nation. This is an umbrella project across the UK lead by Kinetika Arts Link International based in the East End of London.

Inspired by the Derek Walcott quote – ‘The only nation I now have is my imagination’ the project will explore cities of the future with young people.

A story will be created that develops over five years and has a collective imagination as its foundation and the next generation as its creators.

In 2008 the ‘GermiNation’ will begin with the seeds being sown. This is the beginning of the journey to 2012.  The whole project is driven by the belief that we can all celebrate the unique position of living in cities which house the world.

The carnival will have 3 sections:

  • Seeds Grown – This section will tell the story of creative Coventry, Coventry on the move. It will reflect it’s medieval roots and its innovation and industry as regards ‘the wheel’.

  • The second section is ‘Seeds Blown’ celebrating the diversity and innovation our many different cultural communities and their contribution to the development of the city.

  • The final section – ‘Seeds Sown’ explores the regeneration of the city, it’s new landmark buildings and looks to the hopes and aspirations of the youth of the city as explored in The Space of possibilities – A project carried out with 15 schools across the city.

Carnival designers have been busy creating amazing costume, float and backpack designs for all these sections.

Work on the carnival has begun with many masquerade camps springing into action across the city – Far Gosford Street, West Indian Centre ,Spon Street, Wood End Family Project, WEETC in Willenhall, Broad Street New Horizens Centre, Hillfields & Cheylesmore Community Centre and Moat House.  People will come together at the camps over the next 6 weeks to make their costumes with professional artists while the main build of the floats and spectacular backpack large scale costumes will take place at The Way of the Goose in Hillfields.
